Understanding the Ranking & Matchmaking System

July 13, 2026

Plane Sweeper uses a single, simple rank system with intelligent matchmaking to ensure fair, competitive games. This guide explains how ranks work, how you earn (and lose) points, and how the game decides who you play against.

Rank Tiers

Your rank is determined by your total score, which increases with wins and decreases with losses. There are four tiers, and your current tier is shown on your profile badge:

RankScore RangeMissiles / Battle
Recruit0 – 1930
Sergeant20 – 9925
Captain100 – 49920
Major500+15
Ranks vs. Leaderboard: Your rank tier (above) reflects your own progress and controls your missile economy. The competitive leaderboard is separate — it simply lists players by position (1st, 2nd, 3rd…) plus any titles they've earned, such as the prestigious Ace awarded to a Bounty Race champion. There is no second, parallel "ladder" of tiers to memorize.

How Scoring Works

Each battle awards or deducts points based on the margin of victory:

Your score cannot fall below 0. Every match counts — there are no "placement matches" or calibration periods.

Missile Economy by Rank

Higher-ranked players receive fewer missiles per battle, balancing the field against less experienced opponents:

The Master Pool System

Plane Sweeper features a unique mechanic called the Master Pool. When you achieve a 3-match win streak in online play, you're promoted to the Master matchmaking pool:

This system creates natural "hot streaks" where skilled players face progressively harder challenges, preventing easy point farming.

Pro Tip: If you hit the Master pool and face tough opponents, don't get discouraged. A single loss drops you back to Normal pool, and the increased difficulty is a sign that your skill level is being recognized by the matchmaking system.

Matchmaking Logic

The matchmaking system considers multiple factors when finding an opponent:

  1. Pool Tier: Master pool players are matched against other Master pool players first.
  2. Score Proximity: Within the same pool, the system tries to find opponents with similar scores.
  3. Wait Time: If no suitable human opponent is found quickly, an AI bot of appropriate difficulty fills the slot so you never wait too long.

Battle History

Every online match is recorded in your battle history. You can review past games — including the full board layout of both sides — to analyze what worked and what didn't. Use this feature to identify patterns in your losses and refine your strategy.
